Hey! Welcome to another article of “I’m Booked:” your favorite place to hear about what I, Ally Abruscato, am reading! Today, I’m talking about “The Most Fun We Ever Had” by Claire Lombardo.
At first, I wasn’t planning to review this book because it seemed mediocre, and people on Goodreads thought it was boring. But after letting it marinate in my brain for a few weeks, I couldn’t not talk about it.
“The Most Fun We Ever Had” is a story of a large family with four daughters and lots of drama. The book hops back and forth between the past and the present, slowly giving the reader more insight into the family’s history. Both cover many different events and arguments within a family throughout the years. And although it may seem mundane, I love it.
I think I love it because it feels so real. For me, it’s so interesting to see how people interact with one another and what moments from their past have shaped them into the person they are. Lombardo does a great job at portraying this. She also does a beautiful job of showing what family relationships are really like. Parenthood, in my opinion (as someone who is not a parent,) is shown in this book in such a way that accurately demonstrates its beauty and flaws.
As a college freshman who’s afraid of growing up, this quote really stuck with me: “The thing that nobody warned you about adulthood was the number of decisions you’d have to make, the number of times you’d have to depend on an unreliable gut to point you in the right direction, the number of times you’d still feel like an eight-year-old, waiting for your parents to step in and save you from peril.”
All in all, I enjoyed this book a lot. I would highly recommend it (as always, check out the trigger warnings beforehand). It hurts in a good way. I’ll be back soon with another suggestion, but until then, I’m booked.
