I’m Booked: “Tuesdays with Morrie”

Death is an interesting thing. It is an inevitability that people refuse to face. “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom describes a man who had no choice but to face death. In the book, Albom documents the last months of his professor Morrie’s life. With his last lesson, Morrie taught Albom about life and death.

After years of not speaking to one another, Albom found his old college professor on tv, discussing his difficulties with ALS. When Morrie was diagnosed with the disease, it was practically a death sentence. Going through a difficult time himself, Albom decided to reach out to his favorite teacher. The two fell back into their old routine of meeting every Tuesday, chatting about life, death and everything in between.

The book was obviously emotional, as Morrie struggles to survive and teach everyone around him the secrets to a happy life. It was evident through Albom’s depiction of Morrie how genuine and kind Morrie was. It was heartwarming to read the life lessons he taught Albom. The book was relatively short and was split up into brief chapters about the different subjects they discussed. Although the topics were heavy and deeply philosophical, it was a quick read.

While Albom’s writing was entertaining, the highlights came from quotes from Morrie. One of my favorite quotes is, “The truth is, once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.” Like the rest of the book, this quote has stuck with me since I read it, making me question how I live my life.

Although death can be a hard thing to face, it is something everyone has to come to terms with eventually. The lessons from Morrie make it all a little easier to sit with. I found the book to be moving and impactful. I’ll be back soon with another book review, but until then, I’m Booked.
