On Friday, April 5 the award ceremony for SCAD’s 2019 Surf’s Up Surfboard Design Challenge was held in Wallin Hall. Various winners were announced and awarded for their work.
The ceremony began with the honorable mention awards which were given to Rose Schaffer and Andrea Guth.
The two runner-ups were then presented with their awards that came with a cash prize. The second runner up, Alexandra R. Poulsen, received $300 for her achievement. Then first runner up, Charlie Willerton-McKee, received $500 for her surfboard design.
The two grand prize winners were Caitlyn Joy Kettler and Kaylen Hou. In addition to having their designs fabricated at full size, each winner also receives $800 for their achievement. For Hou, the design process began with sketches and finished with digital tools. “Ideas kind of started to flow out of my mind and on to my paper. Then I digitized it, kept tweaking it and finally got to a product that I really liked,” Hou said. Kettler was pleasantly surprised by her win. “I was looking at all the boards and I was like, okay, there’s no way that mine won, but then it did. I don’t know, it’s crazy,” Kettler said.
To see this year’s winning surfboards, as well as those from previous years, attend the upcoming Sand Arts Festival.
