SCAD hosts ANRC equestrian competition

This past weekend SCAD’s Ronald C. Waranch Equestrian Center hosted the 2017 ANRC National Intercollegiate Equitation Championship.
It was the 40th anniversary of the American National Riding Commission Championship and 10 teams from universities across the east coast competed. Students from outside universities arrived in Savannah on Wednesday and completed the written phase of the competition that evening.
The ANRC Championship is broken into two divisions – novice and national – and consists of four parts: the written phase, the program ride, the derby phase and the medal phase. Universities can enter a team of two to three riders in each division; riders compete for both team and individual championships.
Although SCAD’s competing divisions were comprised of only nine students, the whole Equestrian team was present to support them and host the event. Irena Freitas, a first-year illustration major, said there were plenty of jobs for every team member, whether or not they were competing. Some students were designated to check tack and take care of horses, while others took photos or videos.
Both SCAD division teams won their respective championships. The Novice team placed first out of eight teams and the National team placed first out of the five teams in their division. This was the third consecutive ANRC Championship title for the SCAD Novice team and the first National team win since 2015.
