SCAD Radio will screen “24 Hour Party People” 8 p.m. April 9 at in Arnold Hall. Admission is free, but students must present their SCAD ID at the door.
“24 Hour Party People” exaggerates the founding of Factory Records, the Manchester-based record label responsible for discovering bands like Joy Division, The Happy Mondays and A Certain Ratio.
Steve Coogen (“Tropic Thunder” and “Hamlet 2”) stars as Factory Record founder and Manchester music mogul, Tony Wilson.
Fourth-year sound design major and SCAD Radio DJ Rhys Finch explained.
“‘24 Hour Party People’ is a humorous take on the musical transformation of Manchester, England from the late ’70s to the early ’90s. It’s something we don’t hear too much about in America and it actually laid a foundation for a lot of our music,” Finch said.
“The acting is superb. It’s funny. I love how it blurs the line between truth and fiction,” he added.
The screening marks the eve of the fourth annual Audio Binge-A-Thon.
Starting at noon April 10 Finch and other SCAD Radio DJs will compete in a battle of sleep deprivation. The other participants are: fourth-year animation major Brandyn Bold, second-year graphic design major Caila Brown, third-year sound design major Wendy Daniel and fourth-year film major Jon Rushing.
The competing DJs will be in the studio at Keys Hall for 24 hours. They will take part in different challenges every hour, while trying to resist the urge to sleep.
The last DJ to fall asleep or leave Keys Hall wins.
Finch has won two years running; however he has some serious competition this year. Brown, SCAD Radio’s new General Manager, says her strategy to win is by tricking the other DJs with hypnosis.
“The Audio Binge-A-Thon is complete madness,” Finch said. “You watch the mental break down of multiple people trapped within a small space of their own free will.”
There will be an additional webcam set up in the studio to follow the hourly contests. The contests range from Twister to Fluffy Bunny to a talent show.
Students can watch and listen to the contests provided links at www.scadradio.org. There will also be interactive opportunities for listeners including games with the contestants.
Listeners will have the chance to call in every hour for a chance to win CDs or a mini-fridge full of caffeine.
When asked what the winner of the Audio Binge-A-Thon receives, Finch shouted “Glory!”
“We’re not shooting for a world record. We’re just shooting for mayhem—and a little self-degradation,” Finch said.
