SCAD students embrace the possibilities summer holds

As the school year comes to a close, SCAD students have arrived at the finish line. Whether students plan to get a job, catch up on sleep or safely see friends, summer break is a time that wholly belongs to them. In the spirit of finals week, many students were looking forward to exciting plans or activities to wind down after completion.

Dominic DeVito, a second-year film and television student, said he is counting down the seconds until he is reunited with his dog, Scooby. “I genuinely believe that the simple act of petting a dog is one of the best stress relievers in the world,” DeVito said.

So many students can relate to the first time living without their favorite fuzzy friend. Reminiscing about home is a common theme, as DeVito said he is also excited to drive his own car again. With Savannah being such a walkable town, it seems almost less convenient to drive most of the time. However, Devito said he enjoys going for drives. “Not to any specific place, but just enjoying the freedom,” DeVito said.

After being under constant stress for ten weeks or more, small acts of normalcy and home are a fantastic avenue for relaxation.

Darryn Hammond, a second-year advertising and fashion design student, plans to pick up tennis. Although picking up a new hobby is always fun, Hammond said she is most enthusiastic about tennis fashion. “All these cute tennis outfits I’ve been dying to wear,” Hammond said. For many students, relaxing after finals means focusing on passion projects and personal endeavors. Hammond plans to set up a backyard movie night with friends, complete with an outdoor projector. As COVID-19 continues, it’s important to find safe outdoor activities. “[I’m excited about] having our own private movie theater, under the stars and mosquitos,” Hammon said.

Students don’t necessarily need to have grandiose plans or expectations for an enjoyable summer. They don’t even need to leave the city. Devito and Hammond plan on spending their summer days entirely at the beach to finally take advantage of what Georgia has to offer. After working so diligently all quarter, students can now explore the city beyond the aisles of Blick and Ex Libris.

Hammond said she thinks the beach is great for all the obvious reasons, but mostly so she can exist without the external pressures students are accustomed to. Additionally, DeVito said he can practically feel the sand already. “[I love] the convenience of being so close to Tybee, but I ironically never go during the school year,” DeVito said.

No matter if students have big plans for the summer, or were just trying to survive finals, it’s a great time to explore new hobbies, places and friends. Before we know it, it will be time for the fall quarter yet again.
