On April 21-22, the SCAD Savannah men’s and women’s Track and Field teams travelled to Miramar, Fla. to compete in the Sun Conference Championships, signaling the end of the regular track and field season.

Teams such as those of USC Beaufort and Webber International University have larger programs than SCAD’s own. However, SCAD is consistently able to offer them a worthy opponent—and win plenty of events, too. Under the direction of Head Coach Patrick Reagan, both the men’s and women’s teams once again did not disappoint.

Graduate student Matt Corolis won the men’s 800m race with a school record time of 1:55.31, inching past Ben Harrison’s previous record of 1:55.59 from 2011. Senior Caroline Cook won the women’s 3K steeplechase with a time of 11:11.55 while freshman Lemi Wutz placed third in the same event with a time of 11:40.43. Taylor Morris took an impressive second in the hammer throw with a mark of 35.81M.

Perhaps the most-memorable of many fine moments in the weekend’s two days of events was the women’s 4 x 800M relay. SCAD’s relay team of Nicole Kurtz, Diana Gorin, Lemi Wutz and Caroline Cook won the event with a time of 9:55.07. Other impressive SCAD finishes included Max Groff placing third in the men’s 5K with a time of 15:32.51 while Hannah Sharp came in third in the women’s 5K with a time of 20:14.10.

Florida Memorial University—the conference member school which hosted this year’s meet—threw a banquet and awards ceremony Friday night for the attending athletes. SCAD was awarded numerous awards for academic performance by our artist-athletes. The SCAD Track and Field program has long prided itself on having some of the highest GPAs in the conference. That tradition has certainly continued to this day—and will for the foreseeable future.
