Summer in Savannah: grocer’s guide

For some, this summer may be the first time living in Savannah without a meal plan, and grocery shopping can be intimidating when it comes to figuring out what to buy and where to go.

Kroger

The closest grocery store to downtown is Kroger, which is located just east of Forsyth Park on Gwinnett St. Since Kroger is one of the stops on the Silver bus route (which still operates over the summer), it’s a great place for students without a car to shop at. Students can easily find produce and basic goods for their pantry. Luckily over the summer, there is an abundance of the famous Georgia peaches.

Target

Heading outside of the downtown area, Target is located on Victory Drive. Target offers much more than just groceries, students can find home goods, clothing and personal hygiene products which can all be purchased in one trip.

The grocery section of Target isn’t the store’s main priority, so produce and baked goods are limited. However, there is a large selection of candy, snack foods and they often have avocados on sale.

Lucky’s Market

Lucky’s Market, located on Abercorn St., is a heaven for vegetarians, vegans and the environmentally conscious. They carry many vegan and plant-based alternatives for everyday grocery items such as milk, eggs and every condiment imaginable. Lucky’s also has a large bulk section where shoppers can fill up baggies or reusable containers with their desired amount.

Brighter Day Natural Foods

For those who may not have a car, but still want alternatives to products sold at Kroger, Brighter Day is the perfect place to go. Located just south of Forsyth Park, Brighter Day has vegan and healthy alternatives to purchase. Brighter Day also has a large section of supplements, beauty items and reusable/sustainable kitchen items. They also have a counter to order food and smoothies to go.

Forsyth Farmers Market

The Forsyth Farmers Market happens every Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Local growers and vendors sell an array of produce and goods such as fruits, vegetables, flowers and bread that are all available from multiple stands.
