Ten from the Top: classes I really want to take!

Ten from the Top is the weekly column of the very honest and often snarky thoughts of District’s editor-in-chief.

I know that everyone is clearly swamped with classwork and if you are like me you are already hyperventilating over getting the classes that you need for your major. However, hiding deep in the organized chaos that is “SCADPro Advisor” are these little itty-bitty things called electives. You can take plenty of classes outside your major and, who knows? Maybe you’ll even find a minor you like.

1. Intro to Astronomy (20836-20837):

Ok, how cool is this? You get to look at the stars all night! If astrological readings are included in the course I will be first on the sign-up. Plus, bonus, this can count as the one science class you have to take at SCAD so you can make fun of all your friends back home in advanced molecular biology.

2. Writing Literary Humor: Sad is Easy, Funny is Hard (22316):

Expand your humor base to more than just puns and knock knock jokes. Writing is, of course, a pretty necessary skill, but if you get to be funny while doing it too then even better.

3. Creative Thinking Strategies (20425-20428):

You just get to show up and think. Come up with innovative solutions to problems, which is just the fancy way of saying “I know how to do this better than you.” When the class comes up with a faster solution to getting me coffee, please let me know.

4. History of Photography I (21134-12235, 21163):

Have you ever asked the question: how do you build a camera out of a matchbox? No? Me neither, but it’s still really cool to think about. Plus, you get to hear some really funny stories and see some beautiful photographs.

5. Detective Narratives (21831, 22331):

The butler did it! Any detective or crime lover can search out the clues all quarter to getting an A. And who doesn’t want to read Sherlock Holmes? Maybe you get extra credit for wearing the deerstalker hat and having a magnifying glass?

6. Ceramics I: Understanding Materials and Techniques (20021-20023):

This class is way too much fun. I took it because, why not? And I made amazing pottery up to my ears. You make bowls, mugs, sculptures, and get to play with all the weird equipment. It also expands your portfolio immensely  when you show employers you can be crafty and resourceful with your hands.

7. Music Appreciation (20918):

Get ready to be the person everyone asks for music advice from! Listen to music from all sorts of genres and figure out why those terrible pop songs you hate are so damn catchy. Sounds lovely.

8. Introduction to Fibers for Non-majors (20765):

Look at this, the Fibers department wants you to come so badly that they made a class just for people that aren’t Fibers majors. You can take it and actually figure out what fibers is and you get to hang out in Pepe which is a super cool building.

9. Life Drawing (20298-20305):

I’m sure some of you even now are cringing at the idea of proportion and muscle tone. I speak from experience though, this class is cool! I have a portfolio full of beautiful nudes and my drawing skills are 200% better so if you are willing to put a bit of time into the class you will really get something amazing out of it.

10. 20th Century Art (20168-20174, 20176-20178, and 22493):

You can be smarter then all your friends when you go to an art museum and they say “a preschooler could have done that.” Now you get to tell them all the reasons why the thing — that kind of looks like a face except not really — is purple.
