For a show notorious for outrageous fashion challenges and a knack for making up words (smize, Dreckitude), the ”America’s Next Top Model” season 16 premiere was a little uneventful.
Sure, they made the girls walk a runway show across a pool in a Flaming Lip- style giant plastic ball. Sure, some unfortunate model-wannabes fell in. But the most interesting thing about the show thus far is that the house is decorated with photos of Tyra when she was 16.
Last season, Tyra breathed new life into an old formula by changing the prize to Italian Vogue, but what does top model get for her super sweet 16? At this point the answer is unclear. The premiere was short and we didn’t really get introduced to the girls that much.
There was far too little over-the-top Tyra and there was far too much of Fabio lookalike photographer Russell James to make it the fashion spectacle that I know and love.
Right now in my mind the girls are “meh,” and the judges are the same old same old. But I’m hoping season 16 is just playing hard to get like the mood swinging 16-year-old golden bit of reality TV melodrama that she is.
Here’s hoping the next week I say, “S*** just got fierce.”
