Tybee Island shuttle resumes service

By Colleen Miller

Warm weather is just around the corner, and trips to the seaside are sure to follow. With restaurants, shopping and five beaches, Tybee Island is a popular destination for those seeking the sun and the sand. Home to the Tybee Island Light Station and Museum as well as the Tybee Pier and Pavilion, this island has it all. The perfect beach day is now more convenient with shuttles from Downtown Savannah to the Island.

After an almost three-year lapse in this service, the City of Tybee Island contacted the Coastal Regional Commission to resume shuttles on the basis of a six-month trial. Now operating from the Savannah Visitor Center on 301 Martin Luther King Boulevard, the shuttle service will begin again on March 4t, just in time for the sunny days ahead.

The revived Coastal Regional Commission Shuttle offers SCAD students a wonderful opportunity to visit the beach, even if they lack their own transportation. This service will cost $10 for a one-way trip, less than half the cost of an Uber ride, according to Uber’s online fare estimator.

“If SCAD students opt to use the service it will be a cash basis,” said Don Masisak, Transportation Director for the Coastal Regional Commission.

In honor of the revived Tybee Island shuttle service, enjoy this short list of must-see and do activities upon reaching the island.

  • Tybee Island Light Station and Museum

Open six days a week, the Tybee Island Light Station and Museum is “Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse,” according to the Tybee Island Historical Society. Visitors to this landmark have the opportunity to experience the light’s history and beauty for themselves.

  • Eat Some Seafood

With the smell of salt in the air and the ocean breeze to serenade you, enjoy fresh seafood from one of many restaurants on Tybee Island. Popular spots include The Crab Shack at Chimney Creek, Sting Ray’s Seafood, Bubba Gumbos and Salt Island Fish and Beer.

  • Check Out the Local Art

SCAD buildings are not the only places to find artists hard at work. Tybee Island features the work of artisans and artists at the Tybee Cottage Art Gallery, Fish Art Gallerie LLC and the Tybee Post Theater.

  • The Beaches!
