Did you know your department at SCAD has a student representative? The United Student Forum is a student-run organization that seeks to bridge the gap between students and faculty. They speak directly with their classmates and report to the administration in an effort to incite positive change at the university. There is one representative for each school at SCAD, but they are all happy to have a conversation and listen to your concerns, regardless of your major.

Throughout the quarter, the organization hosts USF Xpress meetings. These are open forums, and students are encouraged to attend and voice any concerns related to the university. After these meetings, each member of USF reports to their respective school’s dean and department chairs. This means that any questions or suggestions they receive are taken straight to decision-makers who can help change SCAD policies to meet each individual’s needs. USF representatives act as a facilitator for honest and constructive communication.

Third-year student Meghan Cleary serves as the president of the organization. “USF is such an important resource for students. Not only do we listen but we provide solutions and take action,” Cleary said.

USF often meets with other departments at the university to initiate productive conversations. Recently, representatives met with the Title IX office to discuss how students can respond to issues regarding discrimination and sexual harassment.

It’s important to note that all discussions you have with a USF representative are confidential. When members relay your concerns to the administration, they will maintain anonymous unless you request otherwise. One of their key priorities is student safety. “We work to build transparency at SCAD by creating a dialogue amongst students and the administration,” said Cleary, “We strive to maintain a positive, solution-driven community in which every student feels heard.”

There are always ways for SCAD students to get involved with USF. All students are welcome to attend forums and speak directly with their representatives. Forum dates are announced on their Instagram. Meetings are currently being held over Zoom until we’re able to resume on-campus activities. Once on-campus activities resume, you can visit USF in-person on the first floor of the student center, to the left of the front desk.

USF is looking to build its ranks! The organization is currently seeking to fill representative positions for the School of Design, School of Fine Arts, School of Building Arts, and the Office of Inclusion and Diversity. This is a fantastic opportunity to build your leadership and communication skills. It’s also a great resource to connect with the student body and gain a deeper understanding of SCAD’s policies. If you or anyone you know is interested in representing any of these departments, the application can be found on USF’s Instagram and blog. They can’t wait to hear from you!
