“My goal is always to make the news not boring,” said Brian McGee, creative director of development at VICE News Tonight. Previously, McGee earned a B.F.A. in visual effects from SCAD in 2008.

At VICE News Tonight, motion graphics tell the stories. In lieu of a host, designers craft ways to communicate facts, ideas and emotion through design. McGee helps to create these stories.

“If you watch a nightly news program, and there’s some guy talking at you, it feels, especially for young people, it can feel disingenuous,” McGee said.

Before getting his start at VICE News Tonight, McGee worked at a visual effects studios in New York City. There, he created motion graphics for Marvel movies and worked on rebranding for TV studios.

Check back again Saturday, March 13 for the eighth episode of “Bookmarked and Dogeared” with Halle Hill. Hill, a fiction writer, earned her M.F.A. in writing from SCAD in 2020. Her short stories have recently been published in both Oxford American and Hobart, with a forthcoming story in Joyland. Her story in Oxford American was also nominated for the 2021 PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers.

“Bookmarked and Dogeared” is a podcast about storytellers from a wide variety of majors at SCAD. Our goal is to share the passionate creative work issuing from the pens, paints and tools of students and recent alumni. We want to give up-and-coming storytellers the chance to share their voice and take part in an ongoing conversation about what the creative process means to them.

If you know a storyteller who would be a great fit for the podcast, reach out to social@scaddistrict.com.
