Second-year transfer student Walter Ambrose was driving the Ford SUV hit in Saturday’s accident at the corner of Broughton and Drayton Streets by the Subway. The film major was driving to Hamilton Hall to meet with other film students for a class project.
“I saw the car coming in my peripheral vision,” he said. “I can remember sitting on my side and someone said, ‘Turn the engine off.’ It’s a scary experience.”
Despite rotating in the vehicle 180 degrees, Ambrose only received minor cuts and his left arm is in a sling.
“I’m so lucky I can walk away from this,” he said. “My seatbelt saved my life. The whole windshield was smashed.”
Ambrose, a Virginia native, was surprised by the response time of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police department.
“The response time was really fast—faster than where I’m from,” he said.
Regarding the crash, Ambrose admits he wasn’t thinking about much while rolling into the Subway and scaffolding.
“I was thinking ‘Wow, what’s happening,'” he said. “It happens so fast. No life flashing before my eyes stuff. I guess it wasn’t my time.”
Ambrose lives off-campus and said he will continue to drive to classes.
“I live so far away from classes so I will continue to drive,” he said. “It makes me want to take my time going through green lights. And you have to watch out for tourists.”
