Dear Reader,

On behalf of District and District Quarterly, I’d like to welcome new and returning students to our site. District is SCAD-Savannah’s online news organization and District Quarterly is SCAD-Savannah’s quarterly literary magazine. Both are award-winning, but more importantly, both are completely student produced.

District has journalism opportunities in photography, illustration, sequential art, writing, film and audio production. It may seem like this caters to a handful of majors, but it doesn’t. There’s a unique opportunity for every major at District.

Our coverage spans from macaroni and cheese reviews to immediate coverage of President Barack Obama’s visit in Savannah. Just today, I met a fashion student who asked me, “But I’m a fashion major. How do I get involved?” There are writing opportunities for fashion. I interviewed Diane von Furstenberg this past spring during the SCAD Fashion Show. To me, she was an inspiring woman, but, to a fashion major, that opportunity would be life-changing.

Art History majors? We would love to publish reviews of local gallery shows.

Building Arts? Someone has to interview the guest architects and designers who come to Savannah.

Industrial or Furniture Design students? We would love to publish your product reviews.

Performing Arts? We’re always looking for vocal talent for our audio programming.

If you’re unsure how you can contribute to District, come to a meeting or send me an email and I promise I’ll tell you how you can get involved.

We try to get to the heart of collegiate news and report the stories the SCAD community is interested in.

That’s why this year, I’d like to initiate a new column on the site: “Dear District.” Ask us anything about SCAD, the community or rumors you’ve heard on campus. We’ll find the answer.

As an art school, there’s always something happening on and around campus. We’d like to cover every story that comes our way, but we can’t. That’s where we need your help. If there’s an issue on campus you want addressed, let us know.

Better yet, come to our meeting every Friday at 11 a.m. at Keys Hall, 516 Abercorn Street.

It’s the yellow building with the huge radio tower on top. You can’t miss it. Starting next week, Keys Hall will be on the Silver Route on SCAD’s Bee Line. Check SCAD’s Transloc page for real-time bus locations and schedules.

Learn how to get trained so you can start reporting the stories that matter most to you.

We are the student voice of SCAD, and I encourage you to get your voice heard.

Sincerely,

Deanne Revel
Editor-in-Chief
