Earthquake shows America’s true colors

In recent years, America’s reputation has not been stellar. With wars and rumors of wars and the treatment of prisoners of war, America’s image as the land of milk and honey quickly tarnished in the eyes of the world. With the 7.0 magnitude earth quake that hit Haiti on Jan. 12, America’s true reputation of generosity and sympathy shone once again. America and nations all over the world have come together to donate money, food and valuable medical services to the small island nation.

Many charitable organizations employ digital means as a way to prompt people to give. The American Red Cross uses text messaging as a means of donating. All mobile subscribers on any company’s plan can send a text to “90999” to donate $10 dollars to the help the injured and homeless citizens of Haiti.

In this new digital age, giving is now easier than ever before. Now, because giving is so easy, has the heart of giving, whether time or money, become obsolete? The answer is no.

If anything, digital donations inspire people to give more. Because of the quick and painless process of text giving and online donations, the coffers filled quickly with funds for supplies and food for those suffering on the island.
People of all ages are joining together to help in any way they can. Charlie Simpson, a seven year old in Britain has raised over $160,000 for the Haitian Relief Fund by cycling around a park in his neighborhood.

Locally, the Savannah College of Art and Design created a fund for students, staff, alumni and faculty with ties to Haiti. SCAD added a donation line to their donor’s page for those wanting to help. Filling out the form is quick, only taking three to four minutes to complete.

Some fear the spotlight on the tragedy will grow dimmer as days pass and the next big pop culture story takes precedent. As citizens in the wealthiest nation in the world, let us remember those suffering from this disaster. Let us not return to the sensationalism of what sports athlete is cheating on his wife or what heiress has released the latest sex tape.

Let Charlie Simpson be an inspiration to us all to find a way to give back. Whether it’s through your local religious organization or a private charity, make time to give back. One person can change the world, one act of kindness as a time.
