SCAD Yule Ball to bring magic on Sunday night
Couldn’t make it to the Masquerade Ball fall quarter, or even the Be Our Guest Ball in winter? Have no fear! This year, Residence Life and Housing will be hosting a spring Yule Ball on Sunday, April 28, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. And — true to form — this Harry Potter inspired event is breaking tradition and won’t be held in the Student Center, but Dyson Courtyard.
“The program is happening in D-Courtyard because we wanted it to be closer to the student body,” said Wilson Williams, film major and event creator. He started planning the ball last year with the help of Sally Watson, Lauren Caustker, and Ryan Horton.
“The Yule Ball is something that came to me in winter quarter. I’m a Harry Potter fan — it was the first chapter book I ever read, and the series remains a constant re-read. It’s been a big part of my life.”
So what can we expect from this Muggle-made Yule Ball?
“We have a lot planned,” Williams said. “Floating candles, house decorations, you know. We are trying to recreate the Great Hall from Hogwarts.” And to anyone who knows anything about the Great Hall, that means food.
“Food will of course be served,” Williams laughed. “We are trying to recreate food from Harry Potter. Butterbeer, Pumpkin Juice, stuff like that. We’re getting all of our recipes from fan blogs and Pinterest.”
Sounds fun, but don’t know what to wear? It’s Harry Potter, so be creative! There will be a costume contest for the best original and best recreated costumes.
