“I describe myself as a Black girl made of soup; swimming somewhere between verse and vision. Not quite Southern. Not quite Midwestern. Not quite being anything. Not quite belonging anywhere. And that works for me,” writes Syreeta Briggs, a second-year graduate writing student.
In the first episode of District’s new bi-weekly podcast, “Bookmarked and Dogeared,” we sit down with Syreeta as she reads from some of her poetry and discusses her unique approach to writing. Syreeta is best known at SCAD as the founder and president of Elephant in the Room, the university’s first slam poetry club.
“Bookmarked and Dogeared” is a podcast about writers from all majors at SCAD. Our goal is to share the passionate creative works issuing from the pens of students and recent alumni. We want to give up-and-coming writers the chance to share their stories and take part in an ongoing conversation about what the creative process means to them.
Check back again Friday, Nov. 20 for the second episode of “Bookmarked and Dogeared” with Nicole Barley. Nicole is a writer and filmmaker whose short films recently premiered at the New York Lift-Off Film Festival and the National Film Festival for Talented Youth.
We are always seeking new writers to interview. If you know a writer who would be a great fit for the podcast, email social@scaddistrict.com.
