Kylee Christianson is a third-year fashion design student with a focus on sustainable fashion. Christianson took this opportunity to discuss a collection she created called “Canadian Tuxedo.” This collection is inspired by her many family trips to the North Woods between Minnesota and Canada. During these trips, she became very fond of sustainability and protecting the earth.
Christianson focused on the process of dying raw denim with natural indigo powder. The dying process was created by using shaving cream to create a marble effect. Christianson’s goal was to use as little water as possible during this process. She ended up using a total of two cups of water.
She created a mid-length skirt with large pockets and a cropped cold shoulder blouse. All the different pieces had a unique dye pattern on the fabric because the dye is so unpredictable. This outfit is just one of a few ideas she had for this collection. She hopes to keep pushing the designs of this collection and creating an entire sustainable denim line.
