College Security Report: March 10-18, 2010
March 10
5:30 a.m.— Security responded to a student dispute between two SCAD students at Eichberg Hall. The first student stated that she was working on her thesis when she left to take a short break. Upon her return she noticed some of her paper had been removed. When she asked the second student about taking the paper, he began calling her names and pointing his fingers in her face. While asking the students what had happened, another SCAD student also started taunting the first student. After security was able to separate the students and get them to calm down, it was reported that the third student had posted the incident on Facebook with derogatory comments about the first student.
11:15 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that his designer polo shirt was missing. He stated that he had last seen the shirt while doing laundry last week. The student also stated that some of his other items went missing just before the end of last quarter.
3:30 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that her bike was missing from Barnard Village. The student stated that she had last seen the bike on Nov. 1, and that she noticed it missing on Jan. 4 when she returned from break. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.
9:11 p.m.— Security responded to a medical incident at Crites Hall involving a SCAD student. The student stated that she had passed out on the second floor of Crites Hall. EMS responded to the scene to evaluate her. The student stated that she had a heart condition that occasionally makes her feel light-headed and that she had overworked herself during finals. The student declined transportation from EMS and her roommate escorted her back to her off-campus residence.
11:29 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that he had lost a black shopping bag with a $50 tie in it. The student stated that he had last seen the bag at 1 p.m. on March 9 when he left it behind the small computer lab Eichberg Hall. The student stated that the tie was so light that housekeeping may have thrown the bag away while cleaning.
March 11
7:20 a.m.— A SCAD parent called dispatch and reported that her daughter’s roommate had an overnight male visitor all night long in a room in Turner House. The parent stated that she had contacted Residence Life twice and was upset that nothing had been done. Security contacted the on-call manager and requested that he contact the parent. At 7:55 a.m. the parent called security and stated that she had not heard from anyone yet and that if she did not hear from a college representative in five minutes, she would call the police and tell them there had been a rape on campus. Security called the on-call manager and passed on the new information. The manager promised he would call the parent immediately.
7:30 a.m.— The building manager reported to security that there was damage to the front door of Hamilton Hall. Security placed the item on the maintenance work order list.
11:05 a.m.— Security responded to a smoke detector alarm activation at a room in Barnard Village. Security met the Savannah Fire Department at the scene and determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking in the dorm. The alarm was silenced and reset.
7:50 p.m.— Security responded to an elevator entrapment at Norris Hall. A security officer had become entrapped in the elevator while conducting a foot patrol of the building. Atlantic Coast Elevator responded to the scene and removed the officer from the elevator at 8:20 p.m.
8:47 p.m.— Security responded to a smoke detector alarm activation at a room in Boundary Village. Security responded to the scene and determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking in the dorm. The alarm was silenced and reset.
9:40 p.m.— Security stopped an unknown man attempting to enter the SCAD property at Turner House. When the man could not provide ID, he departed the site. Since the man appeared to be intoxicated, security kept the him in line of sight to make sure he departed the area. The man did not leave the area and attempted to enter SCAD property at the Weston/Dyson booth and was again stopped by security. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police were notified and responded to the scene. The man was identified as being homeless, and a ban form was issued banning the him from all SCAD property. The police issued a report.
March 12
1:59 a.m.— Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police contacted security and stated that a SCAD student had been found running naked and intoxicated through the intersection of Barnard and Hall streets. The police officer was unable to determine where the student lived and requested to speak with a college representative. Security contacted the on-call manager and requested that he call the police officer. Security was informed that the student was taken to Candler Hospital by EMS. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police issued a report.
2:32 a.m.— Sonitrol alarm company notified security of a pull station trouble alarm on the second floor of Oglethorpe House. Prior to security arriving at the scene, the alarm had reset itself.
2:47 a.m.— A residence director notified security that the resident assistant on duty had caught the residents of a room in Turner House smoking marijuana. The resident assistant stated that she noticed that two visitors from Savannah State University had not departed the campus and as she approached the room, she noticed a heavy odor of marijuana coming from the room. When the door was answered there were six occupants in the room— four SCAD students and two visitors. The residence director responded to the scene and requested Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police response. The police responded to the scene and removed a grinder, a small amount of marijuana and some drug paraphernalia. There were also several empty alcohol bottles in the room. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police stated that there was not enough evidence to make an arrest. The police issued a report.
7:20 p.m.— Memorial University Medical Center contacted dispatch and requested to speak with the on-call counselor in regards to a SCAD student being admitted to the Mental Health Department of the hospital. Dispatch called the on-call counselor who stated that she would contact the hospital and handle the incident.
March 13
3:50 a.m.— A SCAD alumna called security and requested assistance at Pulaski House. The alumna stated that she had parked her vehicle at the Barnard/Liberty lot and had been followed by a man who shouted sexual advances at her. She was heading towards her sister’s apartment, but decided to go to Pulaski House because she knew there was a call box there. Security met the alumna and the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police at Pulaski House. A search of the area by the police produced negative results. The alumna was escorted to her sister’s apartment by SCAD security. The police issued a report.
6 p.m.— Security responded to a smoke detector alarm with evacuation at Trustees Theater. Security met the Savannah Fire Department and it was determined that the alarm was caused by smoke machines being used on scene. The fire department used fans to clear the area of smoke and then the alarm was silenced and reset.
8:40 p.m.— Security discovered the front door to the Student Center was unsecured. A foot patrol was conducted of the building and contractors were found to be working on the second floor. The door was secured.
March 14
No activity was reported.
March 15
11:43 a.m.— A SCAD student had three overnight guests in his room at Turner Annex. The residence director informed the student that he could not have overnight guest in his room and that the guests had to leave the building before 5 p.m. The guests departed property.
5:31 p.m.— Security responded to a smoke detector activation at a room in Boundary Village. Security determined that the alarm had been caused by a student cooking in the dorm. The alarm was silenced and reset.
6:40 p.m.— Security responded to a room in Dyson-Weston and met with the residence director, who informed a man and a SCAD student that they were banned from the dorm. The two people both were visiting another SCAD student, and they both departed the property.
March 16
No activity was reported.
March 17
10 a.m.— Security responded to a vehicle accident in the Oglethorpe House parking lot. A non-SCAD individual reported that he had accidentally hit another vehicle while he was trying to park at Oglethorpe House. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.
1:52 p.m.— Security responded to a call box activation at Gordon Hall. Security determined that kids playing near the call box had activated the alarm.
6:15 p.m.— Security responded to a smoke detector alarm activation at a room in Barnard Village. Security met the Savannah Fire Department at the scene and determined that the alarm was false. The alarm was silenced and reset.
March 18
9:20 a.m.— Security discovered graffiti on the Jen Library alley wall facing Oglethorpe Square. Photos were taken and the item was placed on the maintenance log for removal.
10 a.m.— A resident assistant requested security at a room in Oglethorpe House to assist with a policy violation. A new student was moving into the dorm and discovered a SCAD student and visitor asleep in bed. The resident assistant had responded and believed that the visitor had been there all night. The resident assistant explained the overnight visitor policy to the student and informed her that he would file an incident report.
