Arnold Hall parking plan timed-out

By Shannon Craig

This evening the Bull Street Public Library opened its doors to the Thomas Square Project Advisory Committee. The committee provided maps and handouts regarding parking recommendations for the Thomas Square Park area, including Arnold Hall and surrounding streets.

Recommendations will be reviewed and passed or failed at the Savannah City Council meeting on Sept. 6.

The area is notorious for heavy congestion, being a small-business hub as well as a growing neighborhood. Not to mention the daily influx of students, Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

DSC_0634-e1344294471665Changes recommended by the committee are not drastic, but some changes may be surprising to unsuspecting students come fall quarter.

Open parking will still remain along 33rd, Barnard, Abercorn and 37th streets, the 100 block of Brady Street and half of the south curb. However, enforcement hours in restricted time zones have changed and will now be enforced from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Hour-and-a-half restricted time zones will include 34th, 35th, 36th (from Barnard to Abercorn), Howard and Brady streets, DeSoto Avenue and the L-shaped lot abutting Thomas Square

And for students who park in the 24 spaces on the 0 block of E. 35th St.? Those will be considered library parking if the committee’s recommendations pass.

Residents and committee members expressed concern with the amount of student traffic and whether or not students are familiar enough with the SCAD Bee Line.

Provided below is a map depicting the changes that may occur in the Thomas Square Park area.
