Assistant Chief Willie Lovett to be Interim Chief of SCMPD

Assistant Chief Willie Lovett will take command as Interim Chief, Tuesday, September 15. Michael Berkow, current chief of police, will take personal leave from Sept. 15 to Oct. 10 when his resignation takes effect.

Lovett was chosen by the Police Policy Committee comprised of Mayor Otis Johnson, Chatham County Commission Chairman Pete Liakakis, County Manger Russ Abolt and City Manager Michael Brown.

The committee expressed full confidence in Lovett’s ability to assume command of the department citing his more than 30 years experience as an officer and his successes while serving as Interim Chief in 2006.

Berkow will spend the personal time on vacation with his family. He is leaving the SCMPD to take the position of President and Chief Operating Officer of Altegrity Security Consulting.
