Fresh Advice: Leaving for the winter break

From an upperclassman looking back at her freshman year at SCAD comes Fresh Advice, the run down on all of the SCAD programs, operations and secret tricks you need to know to make a smooth transition to SCAD life.

Finals are here and cleaning your room is probably the last thing on your mind. But the sooner you take steps to prepare to head back home, the sooner you can relax post-finals.

So here’s what you’ve got to remember to make sure the move-out process runs smoothly:

FOR ON-CAMPUS STUDENTS

  • Residence Halls will close promptly at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17.
  • RAs will be holding winter break preparation meetings – attend them.
  • Make your room ready for a new roommate before you leave (empty bed, desk, dresser, etc. and clean overall).  “Every year we have students who leave their stuff out and leave trash all over the room,” said Sarah Chapman, assistant director of Residence Life and Housing, emphasizing how important it is to make new roommates feel welcome.
  • Do not leave cars on campus – check out off-campus garage options instead.
  • Unplug everything except fridges and dehumidifiers and keep youf AC ON to help combat humidity. “In December Savannah can get kind of humid,” said Chapman.
  • Communicate with Res. Life if you are not planning to return to SCAD after the break or if you make any housing-related changes during the break.
  • Remember that Friday, Jan. 5, 2018 is the first day you can begin moving back in.

FOR OFF-CAMPUS STUDENTS

  • Unplug all your electronics. Don’t leave anything plugged in while you’re away. You never know what could happen between the time you leave and come back there could be freak storms, electrical problems, short-circuit; it’s best to prepare for anything and everything.
  • Take your valuables with you. Again, you never know what could happen while you’re away – especially since people know SCAD students are away for the winter. So, take all your valuables with you.
  • Clean out your fridge. No one wants to come home to curdled milk. Empty out your fridge, check for expiration dates and if you don’t want to throw out items that haven’t expired yet – find a friend that isn’t leaving and kindly donate your goods to them.
  • Take out ALL your trash. Leaving trash out will cause you to come back to a foul smell and mean that you’ll probably be welcomed home by a family of roaches, too.
  • Take your pets with you (’cause they’re valuable too). Nothing worse than an animal left behind. And if you really can’t take them with you, post on one of the SCAD pages to find a pet sitter for the break. There are a good handful of students who stay over the break (i.e. me! Hit me up!). Just make sure you compensate them for taking feeding/watching your pet for you.
  • Don’t leave any dirty laundry behind. Take your dirty laundry back home with you (sorry moms) or if not, wash your sheets and things BEFORE you leave. No one likes to come back to smelly laundry and unwashed sheets. Leaving them dirty also makes you more prone to getting sick when you return.
