News brief: Get your bike registered online

The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department (SCMPD) now offers online bike registration.

After the bike is registered, the recorded serial number and contact information can be used to return a stolen bike to its rightful owner.

All bicycles have a serial number that can be located in several different places depending on the manufacturer. According to National Bike Registry, the serial number can usually be found in one of four areas: the crank where the two pedals meet, the headset at the front, the rear stays at the back, or the upper end of the seat tube.

To register your bike online with SCMPD, go to www.scmpd.org and click on the online bike registration link. Your registration form will be emailed to the precinct crime prevention officer who will include it in a database for safekeeping.

To register your bike with SCAD Security, visit the Savannah security office at 345 Bull St. or the Atlanta college command security desk at 1600 Peachtree St.
