Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police arrested a man for impersonating an officer.
On May 17, an officer was flagged down on Edgewater Road near Brookside Apartments because a man was attempting to lure young girls into his car.
According to the girls, they were walking home when a man in a gold Mercedes tried to get their attention while slowly driving beside them. The girls ignored him, but the man, later identified as Robert Wright, 68, continued to insist on driving the girls home. One girl said she would call the police if he didn’t leave them alone, to which Wright responded that he was a police officer. The girls walked away while he sat in the parking lot of their apartment complex, watching them. Wright did not leave until a parent confronted him. He also told the parent he was affiliated with police.
A lookout was placed on Wright’s Mercedes until he was spotted at a nearby drugstore. It was discovered that Wright had previously made several attempts at luring young girls into his car. When questioned, Wright claimed he thought one of the girls was a family member and denied ever claiming to be a police officer.
Wright was taken into custody and charged with impersonating an officer. The investigation is ongoing.
