News brief: Man saved by jewelry during robbery

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are investigating an armed robbery after a clerk was shot at a Sing’s Discount.

The suspect walked into the store on the morning of June 5 just as the owners were setting up. Gun pointed, he demanded that the wife open the safe, but the husband stepped in front of her and said the couple could not open the safe. The robber shot at the husband and then fled the store empty handed.

EMS responded to the scene, but the husband refused going to the hospital because his injuries were so minor. The suspect had shot at the husband’s neck, but the bullet was deflected by two medallions around the husband’s neck. The husband sustained a minor laceration from the medallion digging into his skin but nothing more.

Police are still tracking the suspect. He is described as a black male, 20s, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, thin and with dreads and a goatee. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a long black T-shirt, black pants and he was carrying a silver 380 semi-automatic handgun.
