News brief: No room for deeper Savannah river in federal budget

The White House released its proposed 2012 federal budget today. Georgia legislators were hoping for as much as $105 million to deepen Savannah’s harbor and a 36-mile stretch of river. However, President Barack Obama gave only $600,000 in “pre-construction” money towards the project.

Georgia’s congressional delegation will now be left to raise money for the deepening through the usual budgetary process. Georgia taxpayers have so far given more than $100 million for the deepening project.
