News brief: Obama’s State of the Union address

President Barack Obama delivered a motivational State of the Union Address tonight.

“We are poised for progress. Two years after the worst recession most of us have ever known, the stock market has come roaring back. Corporate profits are up. The economy is growing again,” he said during the one hour speech.

He has many goals for America, as this is America’s “Sputnik moment.”

Here are a few of his goals:

  • Invest in biomedical research, information technology and clean energy research
  • Cut down on the billions of subsidies currently given to oil companies
  • Stop illegal immigration and reach a compromise with Republicans on current illegal immigrants in the country
  • Repeal No Child Left Behind and replace it with a better solution
  • Double American exports by 2014
  • Build a nationwide high-speed rail system available to 80 percent of Americans by 2035
  • Focus on fixing the current health care bill’s problems
