SCAD is here to help: student employment

As prices rise yearly at SCAD, the opportunities the school offers for on campus employment extend across the city of Savannah. Academic buildings are in need of assistants, admissions are seeking out ambassadors and student media welcomes students to run for editorial board positions.

“A variety of opportunities exist within academic departments, computer labs, exhibitions, library services, admissions, academic services (tutoring), club SCAD, SCAD Studio and more,” said Director of Student Employment Amy Kirkham.

Students are permitted to work 20 hours per week when filling one of the work-study positions that alternate quarterly.

“We have positions that are only available for a specific quarter. For example, models are hired for the winter and spring quarters to assist with the annual Fashion Show. Summer programs that are sponsored by Admissions (Rising Star and Summer Seminar) hire for their positions in spring and summer,” said Kirkham.

With a minimum of a 2.0 GPA and a 10 hour credit enrollment, undergraduate students are eligible to work, while graduate students are eligible to work with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and an enrollment of five credit hours.

“I think SCAD supplies fantastic opportunities for students to work on campus. And in my experience the work environment here, especially The Gryphon [Tea Room] is encouraging, well managed and overall a fantastic place to work,” said second-year paining major Kayla Kinsey from Wilmington, North Carolina.

Student employment positions are not packaged as financial aid, so any degree-seeking student who meets the minimum eligibility requirements can apply for such positions.

“There are always new opportunities presenting themselves. SCAD is committed to identifying new resources for students. From academic services to equestrian to jewelry, a range of opportunity constantly evolves,” said Kirkham.
