SCAD Security to begin new off campus security surveys
Starting this fall quarter, SCAD University Safety will roll out a new security initiative for students living off-campus. According to John Buckovich, Vice President of University Safety, the SCAD University Safety staff have been trained by the Florida Office of the Attorney General to conduct home security surveys.

“The program focuses on the areas of home perimeter, exterior and interior security, lighting, landscaping, windows, locks and alarms,” Buckovich said. “Emphasis is placed on integrating the use of these components to achieve a safer home environment. University Safety employees will assist off campus students with conducting residential security surveys on their off campus housing and making recommendations on how the student can achieve a safer home environment.”
According to Buckovich, SCAD President Paula Wallace has engaged University Safety to find new ways to improve the safety of our off-campus students.
“SCAD has always advocated for safer campus communities through the proactive and strategic use of personnel and industry-leading technology,” Buckovich said.
The new safety initiatives and changes do not stop there. Other new safety programs have been put in place this past year, according to Buckovich, including adding a partnership with Uber to help reduce wait times for SafeRides.
“SCAD Community Patrol Officers patrol neighborhoods in Savannah where our off-campus students live,” Buckovich said. “The new home security initiative is part of our goal to improve the safety and security for all our off-campus students.”
The off campus safety inspection program will be offered to students in September 2017 in both Savannah and Atlanta. Buckovich said University Safety staff are available to assist off campus students with conducting residential security surveys of their off campus housing and making recommendations on how the student can achieve a safer home environment.
“I hope this program will provide an additional layer of awareness for our students and keep them stay safe, no matter where they live,” Buckovich said. “This program will hopefully be another way for team members of SCAD University Safety to develop relationships with our students and our campus community. We want for every student to know that we are here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist their personal safety needs.”
