Ringleader offers circus for students

By Anthony Demeo

Many students here have bizarre talents and abilities that they practice in solitude. Now, an outlet for all those secret circus souls yearning to display their craft arrives. Hannah Jakubowski, a third-year film and television major, from North Brunswick, N.J. is the ring master bringing a circus to the student body.

“I want to have a fun learning environment for anyone who ever wanted to run away and join the circus,” Jakubowski said. “I loved the circus since I was a little kid. I just never grew out of it.”

With many students already interested and more coming throughout the fall quarter, the SCAD Circus is appearing at a pivotal time. With instructors in aerial silk acrobatics, hooping, contact juggling, belly dancing, poi and of course magic there is plenty of potential for learning.

“I see the underground love for this type of thing, and know that it’s a good way to bring people together,” Jakubowski said. “Everyone focuses on work and school [and] it’s good to have something to escape from that.”

Jakubowski also made it clear that SCAD circus is not just a place for people of unique freakishness. The circus provides a rare chance for students to apply the production skills present within the university to further enrich culture and diversity to a variety of student portfolios.

“I hope to get as many people as possible involved in SCAD Circus. We plan on putting together shows and performances both at the college and around the town. To do so, we will need people who are into set design, costuming, make up, lighting, sound mixing and things of that nature. This allows for a wonderful opportunity to engage the creative community here at SCAD, and to get everyone from all departments and majors working together, trading ideas, networking and exploring the possibilities this collaboration has to offer,” Jakubowski said.

The SCAD Circus aims to have performances in the streets to fundraise and showcase the array of talents. Jakubowski is establishing shows to happen at the end of the quarter for the students and faculty. For students who want a show by students for students, SCAD Circus offers that. Meetings are in the Oglethorpe House ballroom on Tuesdays from 8-9 p.m.
