Beyonce got me moving

By Augusta Statz

Beyonce Knowles has teamed up with Michelle Obama to fight childhood obesity. Beyonce’s song “Move Your Body” is a remake of her hit song, “Get me Bodied” to form a workout music video for the Let’s Move campaign that is not only supposed to motivate kids to exercise, but show them that it can be fun. Honestly, what could be a better combination than Michelle Obama and Beyonce to motivate the children of America?

I decided to check this video out to see how much of a workout it really was.

Let me just say, nobody can do it like Beyonce, but I had fun trying. Beyonce does moves that most adolescents are familiar with, like the Dougie, all while singing and wearing heels. I have to give her props for that. By the end of the four minute and 18 second video, I was breathing hard and definitely feeling it. I believe that dancing is a legitimate form of exercise and this video only helped to support my belief. Even if you aren’t the best dancer, like me, it was still fun to try. Beyonce talks about the moves, in a way announcing what you are supposed to be doing, so it is easy to follow along.

The music video is set in a high school cafeteria and there are lots of kids that are dancing right along with Beyonce. This only further proves that you don’t have to dance like Beyonce to dance to this workout video. At the end of the video, Beyonce bites into an apple, a clever touch I thought, because it only further reinforces her goal with this video. It is not her typical music video, she has a specific purpose with this video: to get kids moving.

I think that this is an admirable move for both Beyonce and Michelle Obama. Both of the women realize that it is important to get kids to have fun with exercise so that they will be more apt to actually exercise. Choosing such an icon as Beyonce was an important factor in reaching this goal. Kids look up to her, and I know when I see her dance I think, I wish I could dance like that. The point is, you can.  Dancing should be about fun and exercise, not about how well you do it—although, doing it well is an added bonus.

So, get a group of your friends together and test out Beyonce’s moves. They will definitely get you moving and for all of the right reasons. I admire the woman’s goal with this Let’s Move “Move Your Body” workout video.
