News brief: Man apprehended after carjacking

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police took a man into custody following a carjacking Sunday evening.

On May 1, a woman was leaving the Gwinnett Street Kroger when she was approached by a man who demanded her purse. After refusing, he knocked her down and took it, then fled the scene in the woman’s car.

Early May 2, officers spotted a vehicle matching the description of the car stolen from Kroger. They attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect refused. A brief pursuit ensued before the suspect stopped and fled on foot. Police were able to apprehend the man whom they identified as Jerrell Thompson, 24.

Thompson was taken into custody and charged with robbery. He is awaiting trial at the Chatam County Detention Center.
